Sarah Bellal | Al-Muṭīʿī is remembered as a staunch traditionalist – committed to the Sunni tradition of adhering to one of the four madhhabs and articulating theology through Ashʿarī-Māturīdī kalam – and an open opponent of those clearly identified as modernist-reformists, Muḥammad ʿAbduh and Rashīd Riḍā in particular. Despite his traditionalist pedigree, al-Muṭīʿī departed from the protocols of the Ḥanafī madhhab in significant ways. These departures are undergirded by markedly modern conceptions of history and science.

Ebussuud’s teachers also include Müeyyedzâde Abdurrahman, Mevlânâ Seydî-i Karamânî, and Shaykh Al-Islām Kemalpaşazâde.

By Ustadha Sarah Salih | An area of study that piques the curiosity of anyone interested in this school and its key figures is the actual works written by Imām Abū Ḥanīfah himself. The challenge posed here is that the Imām wrote centuries before the wide dissemination of written works. It was commonplace for anything written to soon become extinct, only known to later readers via references made to them in later works. This begs the question: how many of the works of Imām Abū Ḥanīfah do we know of, and how many can accurately be attributed to him?
